A Medley of Appliqué Projects

Please Note: Only one design taught per workshop.

General Techniques:

Either raw edge machine appliqué or turned edge machine appliqué with satin stitched stems.

 

Stabiliser and glue kit: $30.00

All of these projects require a stabilizer and glue kit to be purchased from the tutor.

 

Fabric and thread kit:

An optional fabric and thread kit can also be made available for some designs.

 

Requirements:

A sewing machine that has a zigzag stitch and an open toe appliqué foot is essential to this workshop.

 

Skill Level:  mainly confident beginners but the more complex variations require more skill

 

1.    Birds In Paradise

Drawn from my award winning miniature Bluebirds in Paradise a small wall hanging or table runner can be made to a size of your choice.

 

Timeframe:              Two-day workshop - raw edge techniques and satin stitch

Skill level:               Confident beginners and beyond.

Project size:            21” x 12” or larger

2. Floral Delight

3. Victoriana

 

Time frame:

·        Two day workshop uses either raw edge techniques or turned edge techniques

·        Three-day workshop provides the quilting ideas for the border.

Project size:            Approx. 20”-48” Choice of co-ordinator.

4. Nouveau Tulips

This Art Nouveau inspired quilt design can be sized from miniature to small and beyond according to the student’s skill level.

Timeframe:

·        Two-day workshop uses raw edge techniques and only the block design.

·        Three-day workshop provides the block design and border.

5. Floral Adventures

Timeframe:             One and Two day workshops

Project size:            12 “ Block dogwood style block with background insert

Skill Level:            All levels

Technique:              Turned Edge Appliqué by Hand or Machine.

This type of appliqué is created using a semi-soluble fusible stabilizer as a foundation and when stitched gives the look and feel similar to needle turned appliqué.  Because of similar preparation techniques most of my projects can be worked either by hand or machine and so I can teach both techniques in the same workshop, which may increase student numbers.

Description:            One of 20 designs for made using the same simple dogwood style flower.  Ideas will be given to use this motif in blocks and borders.

Kits:                         This workshop comes with a bit kit with pre-printed appliqué shapes on fusible stabilizers plus other notions required in the class.  This is the most cost effective way to provide the specialist items to the students.

Project size:            Varying sizes of flowers 4”-6”

Skill Level:             Beginners and upwards

Technique:              Hand –“Whole unit” turned edge appliqué

Timeframe:             1 day workshop

Description:            A simple motif rose that is then couched. 

Techniques:            Hand appliqué and hand couched.

8.    Single Rose

 

Description:             This type of appliqué is created using a semi-soluble fusible stabilizer as a foundation and when stitched gives the look and feel smilar to needle turned appliqué.  As well as appliqué this workshop looks at the importance of tone and contrast.

Project size:            22” x 18”

Description: Quilt, table cover, picture or runner.  This workshop can be tailored to fit the group.

11. Purple Passion / Funky Daisy

Purple Passion     Funky Daisy

Project size:                        22” x 18”

Timeframe:               2 or 3 day workshop

Skill Level:                A working knowledge of your sewing machine is required.

Technique:              Turned Edge Appliqué by Hand or Machine or fusible appliqué.

Description:             A choice of leaf shapes allows the student to personalise the project.  This workshop also teaches how to draft and make an oval inset for the background, hide shadow through seams, how to make bias for outlining the oval and finally you will quilt the project. This type of appliqué is created using a semi-soluble fusible stabilizer as a foundation and when stitched gives the look and feel similar to needle turned appliqué.  It can also be taught using fusible web.

12. Rites Of Spring

Timeframe:             2 day workshop

Project size:            22” x 18”

Skill Level:             Confident beginners and upwards

Technique:              Turned Edge Appliqué by Hand or Machine or fusible appliqué.

Description:             Begin this small wall quilt.  This type of appliqué is created using a semi-soluble fusible stabilizer as a foundation and when stitched gives the look and feel similar to needle turned appliqué.  It can also be taught using fusible web. A choice of fan shaped baskets allows the student to personalise the project.  This workshop also teaches how to deal with fine points, how to draft and make an oval inset for the background, hide shadow through seams, how to make bias for outlining the oval and finally you will quilt the project.
